Acronym of PBFD
( Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease ) Beak and psitacin disease (PBFD) is a viral disease that affects all parrots of the old world and the new world. The causative virus-beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) - belongs to the taxonomic genus Circovirus, the family Circoviridae. It attacks the feather follicles and matrix of the bird's beak and claw, causing deformity and progressive necrosis of the feather, claw and beak. In the later stages of the disease, the contraction of the feather stem occurs, disrupting feather growth until eventually all feather growth stops. Occurs in an acute fatal and chronic form.<br> < br>cracking and peeling of the outer layers of the claw and beak makes tissues vulnerable to secondary infection. Since the virus also affects thymus and Boris Fabricius, it slows down the production of lymphocytes, suppression of the immune system occurs, and the bird becomes more vulnerable to secondary infections. A ruptured beak and hard palate necrosis can prevent the bird from eating.
